Reunion Day 2 - Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day!  I just want to take a moment to look around and be thankful for this great country.  Even with all of its issues, it is still a great place to live and I reflect with gratitude towards all who made it possible.

I gotta say -- it is one beautiful morning in the mountains outside Cody, Wy.  Little people are up and moving everywhere as breakfast is prepared and enjoyed.

It seems as though my arms are happiest when they are full of little people.  We learn so much from them on how to be a better person, how to be nice, and how to just love.  We lose track of that and somehow think the adults are the only ones doing the teaching.  I can remember Nana telling me once to look through the other's eyes - even the tiny ones and see what they are telling me.  I can only hope to become 1/10th of the great woman she was.

Malea had asked for me to pick her up and so I naturally agree.  Within moments Elena wants to know if there is room for her too --- well, of course.  The little personality within Elena is so tender and loving -- she makes me feel like the best Gammy in the world -- because she tells me I am.  Oh and also -- I am beautiful!  Great to be told.

It is time to get moving -- enough with the cuddling.  We have people to dress and places to go.  Once we are all presentable, the cars are loaded for the caravan into Cody.  The town is packed for the annual Independence Day parade and the atmosphere is indeed very festive.  Upon arrival, I call Matt to find out where he is as he has just arrived from Billings.  What would we do without cell phones to work out logistics?  And in the same breath, are they a crutch?  I grew up without them -- somehow we survived, but even now I have  to wonder how.  I know we planned and organized well, but things happen at the last minute sometimes and how did my parents work that out?  Hmm.  Earth to Lady . . . .  oh yes, where was I?

The parade gets started with the presentation of the colors and I am astounded by the silence that comes over the crowd.  Amazing.

There are outfitters, clowns, bands, dancers, etc.  But the best part is always the throwing of the candy.  And the race is on.

Waiting for more.

It seems that after a short time the oldest and the youngest have given up on the festivities.  However, the candy grabbing continues for everyone else.  With so many boys out there though, Elena can't run fast enough to snag some treats herself.  The boys are great at sharing, but she wants to pick some up herself.  I go out with her for a little corralling of candy to help her out.  Smiles.  Zyra manages to hold her own though -- difference of having a brother?

The parade is so long that even the kids tire of collecting candy after awhile.  Fortunately, the parade ends about that time and we all break into little groups deciding what to do for lunch.  The humorous part is that unbelievably every single person winds up at the same place.  Interesting.

After lunch it is time to return to the house for some relaxing, game playing, sports, and just plain fun.  This is perhaps my favorite part of reunions.  Watching John and Jen teach archery skills, Matt give a private soccer lesson to Bekah, Matt and Trent shooting BB guns with the little ones, and an impromptu baseball game allows me to learn and share with others in the family in the best way possible.  Love it.

Yep, I played catcher and the batter had to retrieve their own hits.

Yep, it is a hit.  I still got it although Ryan looks a little worried for me here.  Maybe the pitcher went easy on me?

This scene is so cool to watch.  The patience that Matt and Trent have is incredible.  It makes it a perfect experience for all.

Meanwhile indoors, visiting and perhaps the most interesting game of Old Maid that I have ever watched.  Too many cards to hold calls for just laying down the hand and trying to hide it from others.  Not exactly working, but they have a fine game anyway.

I am trying to think of a game we can all play when I remember one from years past.  I gather plastic cups and form people into a circle.  Within no time, we have a lot of noise and laughter to go along with out Rump-de-dump chant.  This is truly fun and to play with another generation is kinda special to me as well.  Ryan and I work together as he learns and there are smiles all around as we crush cups trying to keep up.

When the game is over, fear not, the cups find another purpose.  Matt works with Zyra on her stacking skills and she is pretty dang happy with the result.

It seems that every year one special  moment between Matt and Zyra gets captured on camera and I love them.  I even have one framed and sitting in a place of honor in our home.  This is another great one.

As dusk falls on the mountain, it is time to head back into town for the fireworks display.  We bundle little ones up in the back and on top of vehicles to keep warm and watch the show.  We are just along the highway, but can see well enough and the oohs and aahs from the kids deem it a success.  I will always remember Elena saying, "that's a pretty one" after each explosion.  Too cute.  Perfect end to a great day.

After returning to the house, everyone is off to sleep except me.  Now there is a surprise.  I am sitting out on the sofa when I hear someone fall down the stairs -- and then Malea's scream.  Crap -- Rhiana comes around the corner and explains that both of them went down together with Malea hitting her head.  As we are working at getting her calmed down, people start appearing from all areas of the house to see if everything is okay.  Several of us sit up with them for an hour or so and then work our way back to bed.  I think Rhiana is in for a long night.  Thankfully, both she and Malea are okay.  Yucky end to a great day.

Reunion Day 1 - Travel to Cody/Get Settled

Good morning!  We wake to Jen calling and saying she is almost to Cheyenne if any of the kids want to travel in the RV with her.  Unfortunately, we are at the hotel and as of last night Amanda was not sure when they would be leaving today since Trent was not feeling well.  But, after a great suggestion from Mister, I call her back and ask if she will pick me up instead so that I can stretch out a little after yesterdays drive.  Yay -- it works and I am soon on my way.

Mister checks out of the hotel and drives back to Amanda's to pick up Scott and Cass for the drive to Cody.  He is able to have some time with the kids before leaving as they play while Mom and Dad get packed.

Ryan helps keep Caleb out of the way for Mom --- great big brother huh?

Grandpa was letting Ryan work with the camera and this is the picture he took of his brother.  Awesome isn't it?

We arrive in Cody and stop to pick up Jen's rental car.  She and I drive it up to the rental house.  It is truly at the top of a mountain (or at least it feels that way) with the most amazing view.  The only drawback is that the road is incredibly steep and her RV is not going to make it up.  She drops a couple of the boys and me at the house and heads back down to gather others and supplies.  We are the first people here, so get a chance to explore the house.  It is great, but seriously the view I mentioned before cannot be overstated.  I am content to simply stand on the deck and admire its beauty.

The house starts filling up, activity is everywhere, and dinner is underway once everyone has located a sleeping spot.  Whew.  the cousins are reconnecting and already enjoying each other -- absolutely love watching this part.

There is a pond out front and it quickly becomes a magnet for the kids.  I have to laugh at Elena and her "boys" as she is having such a good time with all of them.  With Malea being so young and Bekah a teenager, the boys is what she's got.  It doesn't slow her down even a little.

Rhiana is the organizer this year and she gets the supplies out for us to get started in the kitchen.  Tonight is a Chicken Alfredo with homemade sauce -- yummy.

Many hands make light work, right?

Apparently Mister has decided his hands need a rest though ---- he is kicked back on the deck just enjoying the atmosphere and visiting with Scott.  It IS a beautiful night.

Once dinner is served, the kids settle down and apparently start to strip.  Elena does not wish to have her shirt anymore -- now perhaps that is good since it could get stained, but I personally think she is just much happier without the bother of clothes at the moment.

As Caleb waits for his food, we play cars and are having races on the table.  Naughty Gammy --- she would never allow this at home.  Cars belong on the floor, right?

After dinner Elena and I find a few minutes for a game of "Fish" -- it is getting late though and as we near the end of the game she looks at me and suddenly says, "I am really tired Gammy.  I want to go to bed."  Well, alrighty then.  When a 4-year old says that, it must be true.

I think we all are --- it doesn't take long and the house shuts down for the night.  It has been a long couple of days.

Reunion Time - First Stop Cheyenne

It is that time again!  Every two years we gather as a complete family and spend a few days together laughing, eating, shooting, eating, etc.  I look forward to it each time as I love having all my family in one place  -- so very nice.

Yesterday, Mister picked up a rental car as we have elected to drive to avoid a stand-by disaster over a holiday weekend.  Cassie and Scott are riding with us and so at a wonderful 3:30 a.m. we are loaded and pulling out of the driveway.  Yay??  Ugh, back to sleep for 3 of us.  Mister drives the first 4 hours before turning over the wheel to me so that he can sleep for awhile.  Scott and Cass takes their turns as well and with only one short stop in Colorado Springs for a Buffalo Wild Wings lunch break, we manage to arrive at the base in Cheyenne around the same time Amanda gets home from work.  Time to check-in and relax for the evening.  I need it -- not a good hip trip for me.

As we pull up to Amanda's house, we are met out front by Caleb.  He waves and gives us all a great smile.  A quick walk through the house finds Ryan watching a show and Raef playing on the computer.  Where is Dad?  Oh so sad, he is in bed sick.  As bad as we feel for him, we tell him to stay put - no one else wants to be sick.  Dang.

Poor little Caleb -- he got sunburned pretty bad and his little face is still healing.  However, he is in great spirits and is eager as always to share treats with us.

Ryan and Grandpa cuddle up for awhile to finish watching his show while us girls talk in the kitchen about what to do for dinner.  Once the show is over, it is time to take Uncle Scott downstairs to the Lego table - oh yeah.

The decision is finally made to make a run to Chipotle for take-out.  Sounds great -- no work and no leftovers for Amanda to deal with while getting ready to leave town.  You can tell that Caleb is getting the royal treatment tonight -- he gets his dinner on the sofa.  Guilt at work Mom?

After dinner, Mister and I head over to the little hotel to drug me (yep, need it tonight) and prepare for another drive tomorrow.  Night.  (Oh and an apology for the shadowy pictures -- my fault)

Cass and Scott on the Move

Today is being spent helping Cass and Scott pack up their truck, deliver it to the storage unit, and welcome them into our home. Let's get going.

We arrive at their house and Mister starts taking furniture apart.  It seems like I catch him doing this every time he helps someone move. He says I get a lot of pictures of his backside next to pieces of beds.

The cars are packed to the gills and it is time to load up the U-Haul.  It takes about 3 hours, but we get almost everything in.

Once the majority of stuff is loaded, Mister and I take one of the cars back to our house and leave the two of them to finish up.  When they get to the storage unit, we go meet them and help unload.  I am beat and feeling a bit old tonight.

____________________(Next day)

While Cass is cleaning the old house, Mister and I put the bookshelves together for their room.  It turns out to take her longer than she thought on the house -- dang, I should have gone with her to help.  By the time we go to bed at night -- they are moved.  Now we have one day to get ready to leave for the reunion.  I just want to sleep.
