Saturday Shenanigans - Dallas Blooms Week 2, Truckyard (inc. Fun Museum), and OHB

A glorious Saturday has arrived and we are off to enjoy!  First stop is week two of Dallas Blooms and we're betting it is a HUGE difference from last week.  Check out that post first and then see the changes.  Ahhhh - TULIPS!!!  We haven't even made it inside the Arboretum yet.

Once inside - the beds are coming along nicely.

Last week I showed most of the sculptures that are in the gardens, but I took this one to show the flowers blooming nearby - they weren't last week.

Other areas that have changed a bit - we're starting to see bits of yellow on the forsythia and cherry blossoms are beginning to appear.

They hyacinth is making an appearance as well.  I love these.

The camellia's that had opened early took a heavy hit with the weather.  Fortunately, most of the plants hadn't opened yet, but the white ones are a little sad.  We found only a few flowers that were late - the rest of them are sad.

More cherry blooms - they're coming.

Just beds of expanding beauty.

This fountain is running - last week it was covered in ice on the upper area.

So, so pretty.

Another fountain running - it's nice to see the water features have come out of ice lock.  This one was also covered in ice.

The lights on the trees are on this morning.

We made a point of going over near the Children's Garden entrance to locate the last sculpture.  How cute is this?

Once again, Mister is off to fix the fishermen.  Since last week - one of the rods has been broken off.  Honestly, some people.

Fish are in motion, unlike last week.

New plants on the grotto walls and babies moving about.

In the shadier areas, the flowers are a little further behind, but the water is no longer an ice chunk.

Standing tall - awaiting leaves.  Check out the burly knot on the second one - pretty cool.

Woohoo - more water flowing.  Last week ice was several inches thick here.

The reflecting pool is doing well today.  Seems never-ending water.

Out on the main lawn and HUGE edifice is going up.  It is for a private event, which makes me happy cos that means it will come back down soon.  Wow.

I think the cherry blossoms are popping out as we walk.

This hyacinth bed smells divine!!!!  I'm so happy.

The main lawn area still isn't in full bloom.

There are always wedding and quinceanera  dresses do photo shoots here - but the color of this dress was fabulous.

Newly planted beauties.

We've finished the loop and are back at the main entrance.  Last week - few flowers and NO people.  This week is better.

Back out front - no need to even go inside to see the prettiest tulips right now.

A few last close ups just for me.

See ya later Arboretum!  Time for the next part of the day.

We go back home for a bit and then head up to The Colony.  I've read about a sour house and since Mister loves sours. . . .

It is in The Truckyard and let's look at the fun around us quick.  Oh - we didn't enter there, hahaha.

We entered right by the Beard Science.

Walking past the brewery, some views of the yard.

Pretty fun.

Fun.

THIS is how we should have entered.  Walking between the rows of vehicles.

Okay - back to the reason we came.

Turns out that it is not what we had hoped for at all.  I can tell Mister is disappointed and sad, but ya don't know until you try.  They have ONE sour and then flavor it.  Ugh.  He takes the original and I have a hibiscus seltzer.

We find a spot up above and I'm on the hunt for something to eat.  (I later discover that he is already writing a review on this place - told you he was disappointed.)

More views of the yard.

Finally - yes, it took FOREVER - I have some nachos.  They were worth the wait - might be the best nachos I've had.

When we've finished, Mister and I decide to check out the other large building here.  They have restrooms, so that's my first stop.  Quick pic inside.

On the upper floor, we find Barney Smith's Toilet Seat Art Museum.  Okaaaay.

I find a little info:  "This museum showcases the life's work of Barney Smith, who created over 1400 art pieces out of toilet seats over the course of many decades.  Barney opened the original museum in 1992 in a large garage in his backyard.  From the visitor logs, press pieces and travel books, his museum was beloved by San Antonio locals and tourists, garnering national and international attention.  When Barney was ready to retire, the Truck Yard became the museum's perfect next home.  In May of 2019, just a few days before he turned 98 and a few weeks before the new location opened, Barney said, "I appreciate them wanting  . . .to put my work on display, and to show the world what I did for 97 years of my life.  I'd like to be remembered for how a person could save a lot of stuff that is being destroyed and showing them it needs to be saved - maybe not on a toilet seat, but they can save what has come their way instead of destroying it.  Showing that it's worth something."  Turning forgotten items into art is something understood at the Truck Yard."

Okay - let's check it out.

Woah -

I try to get the room, but the beam across blocks most of the upper area view.  There are just soooo many.

The ceiling -

An article inside LIFE magazine.

Even the columns out front are apropos -

Time to move on - stop at Costco and drop off at home.  We grab our cups and are off to OHB for the afternoon.  It's Mardi Gras weekend and a crawfish boil is happening.  It's a great time and by 6 we are ready to call it a day.  Whew.  See ya tomorrow.
