The Road Trip Begins - Days 1 and 2

It is the first of June and we are hitting the road.  This one is a LONG trip.  We will be back sometime in July and then I will leave again the very next day for the rest of that month.  Let's get on the road.  See ya around the states.

We have passed Bowie so many times and never took the time to see the knife.  This time, Mister heads down and we give it a quick peek.  It has a certificate from the Guinness World Records and states that it measure 20'6" long.  It was placed in April of 2016 and was a shiny gold color at the time.  The story of Jim Bowie and the Bowie Knife:  Born in Kentucky, James Bowie likely never came to the area which became Montague County.  Bowie as a city was formed in 1881, long after Bowie's death at the Battle of the Alamo, but the area's citizenry honored the hero by naming the town after him.  During his lifetime, Bowie was described as "a clever, polite gentleman . . . attentive to the ladies on all occasions . . .a true, constant, and generous friend . . . f foe no one dared to undervalue and many feared."  Bowie was a noted knife-fighting legend, and prominently wore a large knife after an 1827 brawl with several men on a sandbar outside of Natchez, Mississippi.  In this battle, Bowie was stabbed, shot, and beaten half to death, but still managed to win the fight using his large knife, which was reportedly designed for him by Bowie's brother, Rezin, and smithed by blacksmith Jesse Clifft.  It was reportedly "9.5 inches long, a quarter inch thick and one and a half inches wide."  It was straight-backed, described by one eye-witness as "a large butcher knife," and having no clip-point nor any handguard, with a simple riveted wood scale handle.

While in Bowie, we find some coffee in a strange little shop downtown.  It was almost hidden under an eave with minimal signage, but ya take what you can get.

Scenes from the road - somewhere in Texas - the cactus are starting to bloom.

This is my view most of the time.  Soooo many trucks.

Hello New Mexico --- Took awhile to get here.

New view -

Time to stretch the legs.  We have found a brewery just outside of Moriarty, NM, which is just east of Albuquerque.  Sierra Blanco Brewing did not disappoint.  It had a cute little tap room

And a huge outdoor area which was sooooo well done.

We decide to call it a night in Farmington, NM.  Thank you Marriott.

We found a fun brewery downtown, along with a hometown type cafe.  Loved it, but so tired and not really hungry.  Sleep is needed.

June 2nd - And we're off.  Just outside of Farmington is Shiprock.  Again, we have passed it many times, but this go round, we decide to get closer and check it out.

We found a pull out and Mister headed off.  I'm sure he has some great pictures, but I have not seen them.  I'm still feeling a little wimpy so stay in the car while he wanders.

There he goes.

Can you see him?

Back in the car and we are off again.  Utah with it's change of scenery again.  I do love the red rocks.

Stopped in Moab for a Thai lunch.  AND it was GREAT!!!  Highly recommend.

We make it to Provo, get checked into our little place, get Mister all set up for work and then head over to Cassie's so spend some time with the family.

What a great grandpa.

Outside playing games that I can't understand, LOL.  What happened to the easy games of old.  We finally got them to do Red Light, Green Light.

Cassie's apricot tree is SOOOO FULL.

Backyard fun.

I dropped my ice cream, so I'll just lick it off the ground.  Yum.  With that we called it a night and headed back to our little home away from home.  We have the same place we did last year so if you want a peek at it, here is the LINK to that post.
