There are just some times when ya gotta get out no matter what. We are having rain, rain, and more rain, but every so often it lets up enough to make a dash someplace. This morning we are off to breakfast at a new-to-us coffee shop, Middle Ground. We spotted it last night while at dinner in the same shopping center and want to check it out. Along the way - ya just never know what you will encounter.
Map inside Middle Ground. I like it.
We did some shopping - more like looking - at Lowes for a rack to put the brooms and mops on in the laundry area. No luck and wound up ordering online again. Once back home, I set up the machine in the yard to fix Mister's leaf bucket. It has lost all of it's straps and he has new webbing for it. It had four handles and I have some bits of batting that I can put inside to cushion them. I can do this.
What a lovely place to sew. (However, this machine is really going to need a cleaning after this.)
Four handles all made. Now, the dilemma hits. There is no way I can attach the bottom ones. They must have been put on before sewing the parts together AND if you look close you'll see that I left a pin in one of them. Goodness. Well, Mister was able to cut the point off and two of the handles went into "next time" storage.
No way I was going to unstitch what was left --- right over the top the new handles went and he is happy. I mean, let's be real - it's a trash can. How good does it have to be?
Horseradish Crusted Cod and Asparagus for dinner. It's a winner and will be made again. So, so good and super easy.
Well, that was Saturday and now Sunday has arrived along with a CRAZY storm.
Once again - we snuck out between bursts and stopped in at another new-to-us place. Ellens is the restaurant and my meal was HUGE. No way I could eat it all. It was good, but, probably won't go back as there were a lot of other hmmmms.
When we left the restaurant, I mentioned that I bet the dam was really crazy. I so underestimated it. We've never seen it this wild. As I pan in this video, notice that the spillway is level with the river flowing out. SO. MUCH. WATER. We've seen it full before, but this is the highest we've experienced..
The spillway is usually right where it goes from smooth to rough. It has maybe a six-inch fall, where it is usually about 15 feet.
This angle shows it well. Almost level coming over the spillway.
Ya gotta listen --- crazy loud.
So, in case you didn't know about this area: Early Dallas residents relied on natural springs, artesian wells and the Trinity River for their water. By the early 1900s, these sources began to be inadequate for the growing city. In 1909 the city began acquiring land to build a reservoir on White Rock Creek. Construction began in January, 1910, and the new dam and pump house were finished in 1911. Due to ongoing drought conditions, the lake did not fill until April 1914. Beginning in 1917, the city permitted fishing on the lake and within 10 years sailing and boating were popular activities. In 1929, the land around the lake became a city park and the next year the city built a picnic shelter and tables. An Art Deco Bathhouse and Boathouse were added along with a sandy swimmer's beach. Until 1935, the City administered a prison farm at the lake and from 1935 to 1942, a Civilian Conservation Corps. Camp operated, building many facilities. During this same time, the Works Progress Administration provided for many other improvements. In the 1930s and 1940s, more than half a million people visited the lake each summer. During World War II, the former CCC Camp became a U.S. Army Air Corps. Center and the site of a camp for German prisoners of war. A drought in 1953 caused the city to ban swimming and temporarily use the lake as a water source. In 1958, the City passed an ordinance banning large outboard motors; this drove outboard enthusiasts to other lakes and the number of park visitors declined in the ensuing years. However, revitalization efforts have led to increased park usage and a movement to preserve the park and its history.
Now, back to the water. Look how smooth the lake is and yet you know the undercurrent has to be WILD.
Mister taking pictures of me down in the overlook. Long ways away.
As he got closer to me - hahahaha
At this point, we walked around the spillway and back to the other side for the view from there.
This shows how high the drop is at this point. The smaller spillway is beyond those trees.
Driving around the lake --- interesting shots.
And - back to the house to put the laundry room together. All the stuff we ordered has arrive and it's done. I like it ---- super organized now. The extra spic rack holds the small tonic cans perfectly and four soda can holders made sure everything is off the floor. We just don't have a large space to walk now -- it is what it is.
Off to OHB for the meat raffle. Forty dollars worth of tickets and no wins. Dang it -- it was Wagyu this time. Oh well, the beer was tasty. That's the end of the weekend. Tomorrow is a school day. See ya around.
