It's 4:30 p.m. and I have just arrived home from 3 days in Houston. My sweetheart says, "Are we going to the festival?" Well, of course we are. Let's get going. It started at 4 and goes until 8 and is open to the public. What festival are we talking about? Loy Krathong at the Buddhist Temple. I LOVE this festival and the entire premise behind it. I am not going to go into all of that again as I did it in a post a few years ago but just know that it's great. (OKAY, for those who want the info --- click on this LINK from 2014)
The first thing we notice upon our arrival is that there is a new addition to the grounds. We'll need to ask about it sometime but the ceremony is well underway and today is not the day for that.
Front and back of the temple
The monks are speaking to these women (as well as the audience) and we can't understand a word so this is our chance to grab some dinner before the actual fun begins.
As we walk towards the food area, we pass all the krathongs that are available for sale. Aren't they just so fun? Each one contains a candle and some incense sticks.
The menu tonight is Spiced Chicken, Sticky Rice, and Papaya Salad. I go for the chicken and rice, while Mister orders the salad. It is certainly not what I thought it would be --- it's a green papaya and reminds me more of a slaw. By the time he finishes it, his nose is running and there are sweat beads on his head. I was wise to stay away from that one.
Love this statue by the tables.
Okay - it's about time
The dancers are waiting on the side before their performance starts and I love their headdresses.
The movements are slow and yet, very precise and each one means something. I don't know what, but it is much like the hula -- meaning in each movement. After they finish, the monks start lighting the candles in the vases around the pool. These will serve as a place for each person to go to light their individual krathongs.
Once they are lit, the monks then light theirs first and set them to sail.
The girls are now beside the pool - watching as the krathongs go by and other performers are starting to be introduced.
Just some pictures for you to enjoy.
I loved watching these littles -
Before we know it, it's time to leave. Our bellies are full, our souls are lightened and it's a beautiful evening. Look how the shadows of the trees play on the building. Simply lovely.
One last funny before we go --- Mister has spotted this in a flower bed. Too cute.
