Dallas Zoo --- Baby Hippo, Giraffe, New Maned Wolves

Member Morning!  Spring is here and walking at the zoo in the early hours is AWESOME!!  I love it so very much.  The animals are just starting their day and are mostly pretty active, which makes for fun pictures.  New critters have made their home here and we are on our way to meet the Maned Wolves.  As we round the corner, something is happening with the flamingoes and arguments have ensued.  They are LOUD.

Straight to the maned wolves - here they come.  I can smell them right away.  Kind of like a skunk.  Are they wolves?  No.  The maned wolf is a large canine of South America and found in Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Peru, and Paraguay.  It also used to be in Uruguay, but is mostly extinct there.  It's markings resemble those of foxes, but it is not one of those either.  It is the only species in the genus Chrysocyon.  They just call them maned wolves for ease, I guess.

We have a male and a female, but not a breeding pair.

Tongue out -

Now - off to meet Kalo - our new baby hippo.  She's so sweet and right up at the glass for me.  Thank you dear.  Mother Boipelo is keeping a close watch on her and it's hard to believe she's already 6 months old.

Air please -

A short walk away, the klipspringer says good morning to us and the chimpanzees have bongs filled with treats they are enjoying.

In the aviary, this lady has a hurt leg so is taking life a little easier now.

Stopping in at the gorillas finds Sambili showing off for us.

Nea is out and about --- she's not our newest little one, but she's pretty young still.  The newest member of the herd is still behind the scenes as she's only a few weeks old now and I don't know her name yet.

Nea with Mom and Dad - Katie and Tebogo.  Well, that's it for the pictures today.  We didn't get to see the new warthog, Tikiti, or our new baby elephant, Okubili.  Perhaps next trip.
