Texas Vacation - Day Five - Big Bend National Park - Part 5 - Tree Zone/Chisos Area

As we entered the park several days ago, the visitor center had information about black bears in the park and today I commented to Mister that I just didn't see how it could be.  The terrain just hasn't been what bears like in my mind.  Well, all of that just changed as we entered The Tree Zone.  In the Chisos Basin the world of trees begins and we enter a woodland of junipers, oaks, and Mexican pinons.  Higher up, there are forests of tall Amazon pines and Douglas fir.  See -- this is why we need to come back and spend time here and on the east side next year.  It's just so beautiful to end our day.

Such a difference on north and south exposures.

At the lodge, we find the restaurant (which opens in 15 minutes) and I get in line, hoping for a window seat to a magnificent sunset.  I'd have rather dined on the deck, but it is not allowed.  Drat.  At any rate, I'm fourth in line and get to choose our table and I actually opt for one a bit away from the windows as the sun will be crazy hot as it descends and there is an open door so we can just wander in and out to a viewing platform.  Perfect.

Once we order, I step outside for a couple of pictures to show contrast later on.

"The Window" --- we are not here at the perfect time of year for the amazing moment, but it'll do.  Next trip -- we'll hike down to the window itself.

We've both ordered the salmon and it is sooooo good.  (one with Cilantro Pesto and one without)

Watch as the light changes -

The beginnings of a sunset -

It comes with the largest dessert ever - called "Emory Peak" - chocolate brownie topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream, with a cherry on top.  Goodness.

Chasing the Sun -

A magnificent sign behind us.

Mister taking his time -

Life is just so good with him at my side.  Love that we travel together and enjoy the same things.  Yes, we are lucky and know it.  Terrible pic, but it is what it is.

Today's map.  During dinner we booked an AirBNB for tomorrow night and are set to start making our way north again.  See you then.
